Ridge pointing

The ridge is the point at which two sections of a sloped roof system meet. Traditionally the method of pointing a roof would be to use mortar mix that bonds the ridge tile to the roof . Repointing is a method whereby the loose or broken mortar is scraped away and replaced with new.

Guttering

Guttering should be something that you can rely upon without needing to pay much attention to it. However, there are general rules for the upkeep of different types of guttering. Plastic guttering should be good for many years but over time blockages and damage can occur. It is always important to check the integrity of the gutter every 6 months or so to ensure that it hasn’t come adrift from the side of the house and is presenting a danger through falling debris. Guttering that is made from plastic is prone to damage in high winds, particularly if it has been struck by some other debris from a tree, for instance. This can mean that the section of guttering needs replacing, or if you can’t find a compatible piece, then the entire system will need changing.

FAscias and soffits

The fascia acts as a vertical barrier between the outside and the edge of your roof, meaning it bears the brunt of the elements and protects the roof and the interior of your home from weather damage. … Most modern homes have a fascia board, but some older homes lack this feature.

It is therefore extremely important to keep an eye on your fascias for signs of wear, as whilst fascia usually last for years, they do need replacing if the fascia board becomes ages or water damaged.

Soffits

The soffit is the exposed section beneath the overhanging section of a roof. Without a soffit, when you looked up at your house, you would see exposed rafters instead, which is neither pretty nor efficient. If your rafters were exposed, they’d be likely to rot and threaten the stability of your roof, requiring a lot of extra financial support on your part.

Furthermore, soffits help to ventilate your attic as it usually has small holes to allow air to circulate. This is important in both summer and winter months, as air circulation keeps your attic from overheating in hot weather, but also prevents moisture build-up in the winter which could damage your rafters.

Chimney Pointing

Chimneys are often neglected, as people tend to think more about the roof than the chimney. This is particularly true if they don’t use it much. However, it’s important to maintain your chimney as needed and to make sure you keep it in good repair. Roofing services often offer this as one of their services, as it’s best to have expert roofers look at the chimney.

Regular inspections are a must, as is cleaning your chimney. However, you may need to do more extensive repairs from time to time, as well. How do you know when to do those? Watch for the following signs.

Flashings

Roof flashing is a thin material, usually galvanized steel, that professional roofers use to direct water away from critical areas of the roof, wherever the roof plane meets a vertical surface like a wall or a dormer. Flashing is installed to surround roof features, such as vents, chimneys and skylights.
